Two Questions: What are You Doing and Why are you Doing it?

The first steps to success begin with knowing what you're doing, and why you're doing it.

If you've every caught yourself wondering where the time went, or why it has taken long to complete a project (assuming, of course, that you've started a project), or why you've been putting off that dream of yours... did you know you can remedy this with a simple solution?

The way to stop losing track of time is to live with conscious awareness of what you are doing at each moment of the day and ensuring that there is a reason for doing it.

Future success depends upon proper planning, prioritization and goal-setting, and most importantly taking action... but all of that can only be realized once you become tuned in to your daily activities and behavior patterns.  You must be able to know what you did and why you did it.  This is the initial step.

Before you can begin to evaluate your actions and make necessary adjustments, the awareness must be there first.

So if you've never considered the importance of having an acute awareness of what you're doing and why you're doing it, it is best to get started in the basic way possible.  After all, the most direct solutions are often the simplest.

There is no judging at this initial step and no guilt necessary... you simply must be aware.

Sounds easy?

How many people find themselves camped in front of the television every night without any reason for doing so?  They may know what they're doing, but can't explain why they're doing it...

And how many others watch life pass by without taking risks because fear is holding them back?  They may know why they are afraid, but they have no idea what they're doing that expounds the fear (nor have any clue on what to do to alleviate it.)

Remember, this is not the time or place to judge; we're just talking about awareness here.

You also don't have to consider if you're happy with the behavior or not (yet), as long as you've accomplished the first step of having a real understanding of what's going on.  For example, if you work 9-5 at an office job and your boss tells you to do something like make 1000 copies of XYZ report, you certainly must comply.  "I am making copies of this report (what you're doing), because my boss needs it for the annual shareholder meeting tomorrow (why you're doing it.)"  This is good because you have a firm grasp of what you are doing and why you are doing it.

If this is the first time you've every thought about your daily actions is such simplistic terms, and not sure how to effectively begin, here's how:  Ask yourself those two questions... and ask them as often as you feel necessary.  Start right now.

What am I doing?  (Reading this incredibly insightful article from myinnersage.com!)

Once you know what you're doing and why you're doing it, you've taken the first critical steps to tapping in to your inner sage.  You are ready to begin the journey to greatness.
